COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 20 Texas A&M softball team dropped a 9-4 decision to No. 11 Oklahoma in front of 974 fans on Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Sooners (31-9, 5-2 Big 12) scored early and although the Aggies (32-11, 4-4 Big 12) came within two runs, OU put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning. Oklahoma swept the Aggies for the second straight year.
"We had our chances, but we just couldn't put a hit on the board in a timely situation," said A&M head coach Jo Evans. "Tip your hat to OU. They figured out a way to get themselves on base and got a couple of RBIs from it. It's frustrating, but they did a good job with that today."
Oklahoma started the game with a pair of runs in the first and second frames.
The first two Sooners reached base on a walk and a hit by pitch before Haley Nix scored one with a two-out RBI single and Dani Dobbs was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded allowing the second run to score.
Amber Flores' two-run home run with two outs in the second made the score 4-0 in favor of Oklahoma.
The Aggies took back a run in the bottom of the third when freshman Lauren Schwirtlich.
Starting OU pitcher Michelle Gascoigne walked the first two batters of the fourth frame before being relieved by Keilani Ricketts. Senior Alex Reynolds drew a walk off of Ricketts to load the bases before senior Macie Morrow plated pinch runner Andrea Tovar on a groundout to the left side.
In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Sydney Shannon lined a one-out base hit to center and A&M proceeded to load the bases, but were unable to push a run across and the score remained 4-2.
The Sooners put their first runner on in the sixth with two outs and rallied for five runs on four hits to take a 9-2 lead.
A&M scored two in the bottom of the seventh. Reynolds' two-out RBI singled plated Schwirtlich and freshman Sydney Shannon crossed the plate on an OU error for the 9-4 final.
Ricketts (20-8) picked up her second win of the weekend after throwing three innings of relief work. The freshman gave up just one hit, walked three and fanned seven.
Dumezich (8-1) suffered her first loss in the circle this season. In one and two-third innings Dumezich allowed four runs, two hits, walked three and struck out two. Each team threw three pitchers in the game.
Flores had the best performance of the day at the dish, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Texas A&M closes out its five-game homestand with a 6:30 p.m. contest against Sam Houston State on Wednesday.
