AMES, Iowa - The No. 21 Texas A&M softball team homered twice and pounded out 10 hits in a 9-1, six-inning run rule of Iowa State on Sunday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
The Aggies swept their second Big 12 team this season and won their third straight game to improve to 35-11 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The Cyclones fell to 24-21 and 2-7 in league games.
Junior Kelsey Spittler had a career performance going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs.
"Our team looked really good at the plate," said A&M head coach Jo Evans. "We got a chance to see the starter from yesterday and I thought our players really paid attention to what she was throwing and went out knowing what they were going to hit today. If we could fight and find a way to win a ball game when we were a little out of sorts (yesterday), we sure showed up today feeling confident that we were going to win."
Texas A&M started the scoring in the top of the third with a two-run home run to left by freshman Lauren Schwirtlich was on base via an error for Shannon's fourth homer of the season. Freshman Rhi Kliesing singled and then junior Kelsey Spittler blasted a three-run long ball to dead center field. Her fourth home run of the year chased off starting pitcher Rachel Zabriskie and got the Aggies out to a 5-0 lead.
Iowa State put a run on the scoreboard in the fourth when Erica Miller hit a solo shot to right center.
The Aggies loaded the bases and added four more runs in the sixth with an RBI single from May, a fielder's choice RBI by Kliesing and two-run double off the top of the left field fence from Spittler.
Dumezich (11-1) threw all six innings in the circle for her second win this weekend. She held the Cyclones to one run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Zabriskie (19-13) threw two and one-third innings in the loss and allowed five runs on five hits, walked two and added four K's. Lauren Kennewell finished the game and gave up four runs and five hits.
In addition to Spittler, Schwirtlich had a multiple-hit game going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Shannon, May, Kliesing, Dumezich, senior Macie Morrow and sophomore Kelsea Orsak each added a hit.
The Aggies return to the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to Austin, Texas, for the second game of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown against the Longhorns. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
