COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 20 Texas A&M softball team smashed three home runs and pounded out 11 hits in an 11-1 run rule of Baylor on Wednesday evening at the Aggie Softball Complex.
In possibly the last home game of her career, senior Macie Morrow led all hitters going 3-for-3 with her first homer of the year and a season-high four RBIs. From Sugar Land, Texas, the Aggie shortstop's three-run blast in the fourth, sparked a six-run inning and broke open a one-run game.
Texas A&M (37-13, 8-6 Big 12) split the two-game series with the Lady Bears (26-20, 6-9 Big 12), but with the help of 1,257 fans, scored the most runs against BU since 1987 when the Aggies won 15-1 in Norman, Okla.
"They just exploded today and I'm really proud of our team," said A&M head coach Jo Evans. "The bottom of our order was terrific. In these last two games, we've had nine hitters; we haven't just been counting on the middle of our order. Macie was just right on the ball all night. It was fun to see her swinging the bat like she was."
Baylor tallied the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the second with a two-out, solo home run to left center by Dani Leal.
The Aggies, however, answered in the bottom of the inning and took the lead with a pair of runs. Senior Alex Reynolds led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by junior Kelsey Spittler. Morrow then lined a two-out single just into the centerfield grass to plate Reynolds. Sophomore Kelsea Orsak followed with an RBI double to right center to score Morrow from first.
"Our kids answered right back," commented Evans. "We did a nice job of setting the table and moving runners tonight. Our bunting was really good and then we had the timely hits. It was nice to see our players feeling good at the plate all through the order."
After a scoreless third, A&M exploded for six runs in the fourth. Reynolds led off with a single and Spittler walked before Morrow launched a three-run blast to right center. Freshman Lauren Schwirtlich kept the Aggies going with a two-out, infield single and scored on a dropped pop fly in the infield. Freshman Meagan May then stepped to the plate and chased off starting pitcher, Courtney Repka, with a two-run shot to left - her 21st home run of the season.
With two outs in the sixth and junior Rhi Kliesing and Reynolds on base, Spittler ended the game with a three-run long ball to right. It marked her sixth home run of the season and third in the last five games. Freshman Melissa Dumezich (13-1) picked up the win in the circle after six innings of work. She allowed just one run on three hits, walked two and fanned four.
Repka (18-14) struck out a career-high 11 batters the last time the two teams met, but was tagged for eight runs (five earned) on six hits tonight. She walked two and added just two K's.
Reynolds was 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a walk, Kliesing went 2-for-4 with a run, and Spittler was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, two runs and a walk.
The Aggies travel to Texas Tech this weekend for a two-game series against the Red Raiders. Saturday's game is set for 2 p.m., while first pitch Sunday is at noon.
