OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Texas A&M freshman Melissa Dumezich struck out eight and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the third-seeded Aggies to a 5-0 blank of No. 6 seed Nebraska on Saturday evening in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
From Whiting, Ind., Dumezich (17-1) threw a complete-game shutout, her fourth of the season, after allowing just two hits. She also homered and scored two runs in the game.
The Aggies (42-13) advance to play second-seeded Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. Saturday on the alternate field, while the Huskers (29-27) are eliminated from the conference tournament.
“Our team looked really good and Mel (Dumezich) was in complete control of the game,” said Evans. “She (Dumezich) just cruised. Her ball was moving great and she had great location and a great presence in the circle.”
Texas A&M jumped out ahead immediately in the contest with a run in the bottom of the first. Freshman Lauren Schwirtlich drew a lead-off walk and A&M proceeded to load the bases with one out. Junior Kelsey Spittler then hit a deep sacrifice fly to left center to easily plate Schwirtlich from third for a quick 1-0 lead.
Spittler led off the bottom of the fourth with a hard-hit triple off the top of the left-center fence and with two outs, Dumezich came through with a line-drive, RBI single to center. Sophomore Kelsea Orsak followed with a single to left before both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Schwirtlich then slapped a base hit up the middle to score two more for a 4-0 advantage.
Dumezich added another run in the sixth with a solo shot to right center. Her sixth long ball of the season put the Aggies up 5-0.
Ashley Hagemann (14-14) picked up the loss in the circle. She gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits, walked four and struck out six.
At the plate for the Aggies, Orsak was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Schwirtlich went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Splittler laced her fifth triple of the season, added an RBI and scored a run.
