COLLEGE STATION – The No. 4 Texas A&M equestrian team fell to No. 2 Georgia, 10-9, Saturday at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
"On the Hunt Seat side, we stuck in there. Historically Georgia is a very tough Hunt Seat team, so I am happy with how we performed," head coach Tana McKay said. "On the Western side, we made some costly errors. When you are playing a team like Georgia you can't make those errors like we did. That got us in hole that we couldn't get out of. We will get back to practice and work on correcting those mistakes for Baylor."
The Aggies (6-2, 2-2 SEC) took an early 3-2 advantage over the Bulldogs after Equitation over Fences. Junior Haley Webster was named MOP after defeating Leylan Gleeson, 86-81, before sophomore Alex Desiderio topped Alex Maracic, 80-79. Senior Marlena Parker closed the event with an 82-81 victory over Liza Finsness.
In Horsemanship, senior Carolyn Day scored the event's first point, defeating Georgia's Rachel Kolb 73.5-69. Sophomore Avery Ellis eclipsed one of three 75's scored by Georgia, earning MOP honors for her ride of 77.5. Junior Kaci Fisher gave the Aggies a 6-4 lead at the half following her 76-75 win over Madison Anger.
The Bulldogs bounced back with three consecutive points in Equitation on the Flat, but the Aggies responded with wins from Anna Rea and Audrey Gallagher to lead 8-7 heading into Reining. Rea topped Leylan Gleeson, 83-78, to earn MOP honors before Gallagher scored a 79 to defeat Meg O'Mara's 75.
Georgia clinched the match after winning the first three points in Reining before senior Logan Pluhar and Charley Thiel tied at 72. Senior Ashley Dotson continued her perfect season in the event, defeating Claudia Spreng, 73.5-70.5, to earn MOP honors. With the win, the Reno, Nev., native moves to 8-0-0 on the year.
The Aggies return to action Feb. 5 against No. 3 Baylor at 9 a.m. at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
