COLLEGE STATION – No. 4 Texas A&M equestrian upset No. 3 Baylor, 10-8, Friday at the Hildebrand Equine Complex. With the win, the Aggies move to 7-2 (2-2 SEC) on the season.
"The girls were obviously disappointed after last weekend and I think that came into play when we were practicing this week," head coach Tana McKay said. "We had some tough practices. The girls were ready for another top-3 team, and I thought we were consistent today across the board. It is always challenging with a judged sport, but I think we were really good at being consistent in all four events."
The Aggies took an early 3-1 lead after Reining as junior Jaci Marley earned the first point of the match, defeating Claire Uhlman, 64.5-55. Junior Sarah Kate Grider topped Elizabeth Shank, 71-70.5, before senior Hannah Jechow earned MOP honors after defeating Mary Brown, 70.5-69.
The Bears evened the match at four after Equitation on the Flat as senior Audrey Gallagher picked up the lone point for the Aggies, defeating Jenny Mitchell, 81-79, to earn MOP honors.
Texas A&M regained the lead, winning Horsemanship, 3-2. Junior Kaci Fisher secured the first point, defeating Bray Bergstrom, 73.5-69.5. Baylor reeled off back-to-back wins before senior Carolyn Day scored a 73.5 to defeat Abbi Demel's 67, and senior Logan Pluhar closed the event with a 74-73 victory over Charlotte Green.
In Equitation over Fences, Marlena Parker defeated Paige Parker, 84-78, before sophomore Alex Desiderio and freshman Rebekah Chenelle cliniched the win for the Aggies. Desiderio knocked off Gabby Conte, 82-77, for her seventh win of the season, while Chenelle edged out Alicia Gasser, 81-80.
Texas A&M will return to action Feb. 20 at South Carolina. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
