BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – The No. 3 Texas A&M equestrian team recorded its first SEC road win of the season Saturday, defeating No. 9 South Carolina, 10-9, at One Wood Farm.
"Any road win is a great win," head coach Tana McKay said. "South Carolina is a tough team and the reigning national champions. We had some mistakes but this win was a total team effort and I am very proud of the girls."
The Aggies began the day with an early lead after senior Ashley Dotson put the first point on the board, edging out Bailey Walters, 66-60.5. Junior Sarah Kate Grider added another point for the Aggies after defeating Makayla Clegg, 65.5-65, before senior Logan Pluhar captured the final point to give the Aggies a 3-2 lead in a performance that earned her MOP honors.
Texas A&M maintained the lead winning Equitation over Fences, 3-2. Sophomore Alex Desiderio knocked off Sydney Smith, 86-85, for her eighth win of the season. After South Carolina rallied to win the next two points, junior Haley Webster and freshman Rebekah Chenelle defeated Samantha Kraus, 79-40, and Lizzie van der Walde, 83-64, respectively, to give the Aggies a 7-3 lead at the half.
The Gamecocks rallied to win all five points in horsemanship, before the Aggies won Equitation on the Flat, 3-1. Desiderio earned MOP honors after defeating van der Walde, 81-71. Junior Isabella Norton and senior Audrey Gallagher clinched the win for the Aggies. Norton edged out Erin Fry, 71-62, and Gallagher scored a 67, defeating Chloe Schmidt, 67-60.
Texas A&M will return to action Feb. 27 against Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. CT at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
