No. 1 Texas A&M battles at No. 2 Auburn, falls via tiebreaker 9-9 (1594-1501.5)
Oct 15, 2016 | Equestrian
AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 1 Texas A&M Equestrian team fell to No. 2 Auburn, 9-9 (1594-1501.5), Saturday at the Auburn University Horse Center.
"I was really proud with the way we came out and competed today," head coach Tana McKay said. "Any time you can come to the defending national champion's home arena and come away with a tie, I think that is a big deal. We have a few kinks to work out for another tough road meet next week against a team we haven't faced in a long time."
The Aggies (2-1, 1-1 SEC) took an early 3-2 lead after Equitation over Fences. Sophomore Rebekah Chenelle led off with an 86-83 victory over Ashton Alexander, before junior Rachael Hake defeated Hayley Iannotti, 85-82. Senior Haley Webster capped off the event, topping Becky Kozma, 75-72.
Junior Avery Ellis scored the lone point for Texas A&M in Horsemanship, defeating Kelsey Jung, 72.5-70.5.
In Equitation on the Flat, Hake and junior Maddie Swem were awarded ties prior to Chenelle earning MOP honors with an 88-86 win against Alexander.
Trailing 8-5 heading in Reining, the Aggies rallied to tie the meet, winning the event, 4-1. Sophomore Haley Franc edged out Betsy Brown, 71-70.5, before junior Jaci Farley topped Blair McFarlin, 67.5-66.5. Junior Madison Bohman defeated Ali Fratessa, 72.5-71, and was named MOP for her performance. Senior Sarah Kate Grider closed out the meet with a 69-68 victory over Kara Kaufmann.
Texas A&M returns to action October 22 at South Dakota State at 10 a.m. CT.
