BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko was selected the Paul "Bear" Bryant and Dodd Trophy National Coach of the Week.
Elko helped guide the Aggies to a thrilling 41-40 road victory over No. 8 Notre Dame on Saturday. Quarterback Marcel Reed connected with tight end Nate Boerkircher on 4th-and-goal from 11 yards out with just 13 seconds remaining, before kicker Randy Bond made the decisive PAT to seal the win. The triumph marked the Aggies' first road victory over an Associated Press top-25 opponent since 2014 and their first road win over a ranked non-conference foe since 1979. Additionally, the victory marked Elko's third over a top-10 opponent during his tenure in Aggieland.
Texas A&M's offense racked up 488 total yards and Reed finished the game with 360 yards and two touchdowns, adding 37 rushing yards to log a career-high 397 total yards of offense. Wide receiver Mario Craver also had a career night, hauling in seven receptions for 207 yards and an 86-yard touchdown, becoming just the eighth Aggie to record a 200-yard receiving game. Running back Le'Veon Moss anchored the ground attack with three second quarter rushing touchdowns.
The Aggies' defense delivered 8.0 tackles for loss against the Irish with linebacker Daymion Sanford and defensive tackle DJ Hicks leading the way with 2.0 each, while linebacker Scooby Williams recorded the team's first interception on the year.
The Bear Bryant National Coach of the Week honor was awarded by the Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards committee, while the Dodd Trophy acknowledgment was given by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc.
The Aggies have an open date before returning to action Saturday, Sept. 27 when they host Auburn in their SEC opener at Kyle Field. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.
