Narumbe’s 800m Title Highlights Final Day of SEC Indoor Championships

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M track & field's Peter Narumbe won the men's 800m title on the final day of the SEC Indoor Championships Saturday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility.
The Aggies concluded the conference championships with a third-place team finish on the men's side with 66.2 points, while the women took seventh with 51 points. The Maroon & White secured a 10-medal haul which included three gold, three silver and four bronze, while also taking down three school records.
Narumbe highlighted the final day for the Maroon & White, as the freshman phenom continued A&M's rich tradition in the 800m capturing gold with a time of 1:47.83. His victory marked the ninth gold in the last 11 indoor championships in the event for the Aggies and third straight. Reece Sharman-Newell also finished seventh in 1:49.21.
Ja'Qualon Scott added to his decorated resume, claiming the silver medal in the 60m hurdles. The senior crossed the line in 7.50 which is the second-fastest time in program history behind his own school record (7.46) which he set in Friday's prelims. In the women's event, Jaiya Covington registered a fifth-place finish with a time of 8.04.
Aleksandr Solovev grabbed the lone medal in the field on the final day, taking third in the men's pole vault. The senior cleared 5.68m/18-7.5 to secure his first indoor conference medal. Oleg Ananev had his season-best showing in the event, soaring over 5.46m/17-11 which was good for fourth overall and entered him at No. 10 in the Aggie record books.
The Maroon & White swept the bronze medals in both the men's and women's 200m's, courtesy of Auhmad Robinson and Camryn Dickson, respectively. The pair won the opening heats which rounded out to third overall, as Robinson clocked a mark of 20.41, while Dickson finished in 22.76.
Machaeda Linton contributed another impressive showing in the field on the final day, tacking on a fourth-place result in the triple jump. The senior leapt a season-best 13.21m/43-4.25 which solidified her position at No. 10 in program history. Linton's showing in both the long jump on Thursday and triple jump on Saturday brought in a team-leading 13 points.
The women's mile duo secured the first points on the track, as Sophia Bendet and Elise Smoot finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Bendet crossed the line in 4:41.81, while Smoot was right behind with a time of 4:42.59.
The final points on the track came courtesy of the women's 4x400m group, as the quartet of Jahnile Registre, Tyler Lowe, Lacarthea Cooper and Dickson clocked a season-best mark of 3:30.38 which was good for fifth.
Etoro Bassey got the point scoring started on the final day in the men's high jump, as he tied for sixth with a clearance of 2.14m/7-0.25. He was the only freshman to score in the event.
Carlie Weiser saved her season best for the right moment, securing a point for the women's squad in the shot put. The junior recorded a toss of 15.72m/51-7 to take eighth in the event.
