Pounds paced the Aggies with a 7-under 135, marking his second first-place tie of the season and his fourth top-five finish of the year. UCF's Chase Haygood took home the trophy, prevailing in a playoff. Pounds penciled in a 6-under 65 Tuesday, firing seven birdies, including four in a five-hole span from Nos. 11-15.
Wheaton Ennis delivered one of the biggest moves of the tournament, climbing 15 spots into a tie for third place at 6-under 136. The finish marked Ennis' first top-five showing of the season. He ended the tournament tied for the most birdies with 11. He recorded seven birdies in Tuesday's round of 6-under 65, including a stretch of four in the last five holes.
Jaime Montojo was solid as the Aggies' third player on the leaderboard. He finished tied for 20th place at 1-over 143 following Tuesday's 1-over 72.
Texas A&M posted a 5-under 563 to secure third place, finishing four strokes behind runner-up UNCW and five shots back of Florida for the top spot.
Alex Long finished tied for 50th at 7-over, while Jack Usner placed tied for 58th at 9-over. Competing as an individual, Jake Maggert carded a 5-over total to finish tied for 43rd.
After opening the tournament tied for fourth place following Monday's round, the Aggies showed strong improvement over the final day. TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Brian Kortan
On Aaron Pounds' tournament...
"Obviously when you've tied for a win that's a great job. He probably didn't get out of the round what he wanted yesterday, but today he was just really solid from hole 1 to hole 18. He had a really nice look on 18 that just ran by the hole from about 10 feet to win the tournament outright, but he's playing really good golf and it's great to sea."
On Aaron and Wheaton Ennis being solid performers at the top of the lineup...
"Those two finished really strong today. They were it in early moved up the leaderboard all day. You need guys that can compete at that level. We'll work on getting a few more guys that can do that, but to have those guys at the top of the lineup, I wouldn't trade it. We're lucky to have them."
On how he would rate the team's performance at the tournament...
We say it every time we leave town, we expect to win. So from that point we didn't quite get the job done. We hold ourselves to a pretty high standard and we didn't meet that this week. But there were a lot of positives, and we made some steps. It's been a good start to the season in terms of the work we've put in and the guys are chomping at the bit to get out and compete again next week in Hawai'i."
UP NEXT...
The Aggies return to action Thursday, February 12, when they travel to Hawai'i for the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
