No. 5 Aggies Take Down No. 18 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE– The No. 5 Texas A&M women's tennis team powered past No. 18 Tennessee, 4-2, Friday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium.
No. 2 Lucciana Perez secured the victory with her 27th consecutive SEC regular-season win.
Doubles play opened with a tightly contested battle. Tennessee (8-5, 4-4) secured the early advantage. After the Aggies (15-3, 7-1) struck first on court 3, as Daria Smetannikov/Lexington Reed delivered a 6-2 win over Katrina Scott/Maeve Thornton, the Volunteers responded by taking the next two courts.
No. 24 Leyla Risso/Catherine Aulia evened the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over No. 75 Ilinca Amariei/Violeta Martinez on court 2 before No. 74 Vanesa Suarez/Francesca Mattioli clinched the point for Tennessee, edging out No. 8 Mia Kupres/Perez, 7-5, on court 1.
The Maroon & White responded in singles with a strong showing across the lineup. A&M got on the board with Reed cruising past No. 92 Catherine Aulia on court 4, 6-1, 6-2. Tennessee answered on court 3, as No. 18 Risso topped No. 54 Amariei, 6-1, 6-1 before No. 31 Kupres evened the score on court 2, putting down Suarez, 6-2, 7-5.
The Aggies claimed their first lead, 3-2, when Smetannikov grinded out a 7-5, 6-4 win on court 6 over Audrey Aulia. Perez clinched the match with a statement win on court 1, battling through a tight first set to defeat No. 59 Scott, 7-6(8), 6-3. Perez improved to 16-0 on the season.
No. 96 Martinez held a first set edge over Mattioli when the match went unfinished.
