Aggies Advance to NCAA 2nd Round with Seahawk Sweep
May 02, 2026 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION – The 11-seed Texas A&M men's tennis team opened NCAA play with a 4-0 sweep of the Wagner Seahawks in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday at the George P. Mitchell '40 Tennis Center.
With their 20th win of the season, the Aggies advance to Sunday's second-round matchup against Stanford, which logged a 4-1 win over Penn. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
The Aggies flexed their depth against the Seahawks, who nabbed their NCAA berth by winning the NEC Conference tournament title. Aggie head coach Steve Denton inserted several bench players in his first-round lineup with senior Ethan Silva in doubles and redshirt sophomore Ritesh Patil and freshman Kriish Tyagi in the singles lineup.
"Everything starts over and we know what's at stake," head coach Steve Denton said. "Our guys were able to comfortably win the doubles point, which gave them a bit of confidence. We were able to get a couple of guys in matches today that hadn't been playing that much, which was really important for them to get a taste of the tournament as well."
Silva, playing his first-career NCAA match, teamed with fellow senior Togan Tokac to clinch the doubles point and give the Aggies a quick 1-0 lead over Wagner. Silva and Tokac put the Maroon & White on the scoreboard with a 6-3 win at court 2. Moments before the Aggies' duo of junior Lathan Skrobarcek and freshman Markus Molder tallied a 6-3 triumph at court 3.
Once in singles, sophomore Theo Papamalamis, recently named to the All-SEC team, made quick work of Wagner's Eddie Schmidt with a 6-0, 6-1 win on the first court and Tyagi took down Vibhu Challagundla, 6-2, 6-1, at court 5 to put the Aggies one away from the clinch.
Sophomore Alex Frusina delivered the clinch with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Lukas Escher at court 2 to send the Aggies to the second round. The Aggies were ahead on the three remaining courts after logging first-set victories when the matched ended.
