SAN MARCOS, Texas - Despite home runs by seniors Erin Glasco and Holly Ridley, the No. 19 Texas A&M softball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Texas State on Wednesday evening at Bobcat Field.
In front of 1,353 fans, Glasco blasted her first home run of the year, while Ridley launched her fourth, but the Aggies (5-6) fell in the bottom of the seventh to the Bobcats (6-4) who upset then No. 14 Houston last week.
"We're really disappointed to drop a game against Texas State," said head coach Jo Evans. "We've played a lot of close games and we haven't been able to hang on in the end. We're going to have to do a better job of finishing and I want to see us sure-up our defense. We have the kind of infield and outfield that can make plays and it's important for us to keep ourselves in a game."
Glasco led off the top of the second inning with her first home run of the year, a solo shot off of the scoreboard in right field.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, a walk and a stolen base put Chandler Hall on second. Leah Boatright then plated Hall to tie the game, 1-1, after she dropped an RBI single into shallow right center that was nearly caught over the shoulder by sophomore Natalie Villarreal.
Ridley put the Aggies back up by one with a lead-off, solo home run to right center in the top of the fourth.
A single and two Aggie errors allowed Texas State to even the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.
The score remained tied through two and a half innings, but in the bottom of the seventh, a one-out single, a walk and a wild pitch put two Bobcats in scoring position before Boatright dropped a bloop single into shallow center field to score Alex Newton and give Texas State the come-from-behind win.
"Right now it's really critical that we stay positive," said Evans. "It's also important for us to put this game behind us and get out there and play with great intensity and be aggressive at the plate. I have no doubt that once we start hitting something good is going to happen and we can get ourselves on a role. We need to go out there and understand that we can take charge of games."
The Aggies are back on the diamond Friday as they travel to Houston for five games at the Marriot Houston Classic. A&M faces Northern Illinois, Prairie View A&M, McNeese State, Illinois and host, No. 18 Houston on the weekend.
