AMES, Iowa - The No. 21 Texas A&M softball team was down to its last strike against Iowa State on Saturday afternoon before freshman Meagan May tied the game and A&M's single season home run record with her 18th long ball of the year. The Aggies (34-11, 5-4 Big 12) then scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-2, come-from-behind victory against the Cyclones (24-20, 2-6 Big 12) at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
"We made so many mistakes and we gave ourselves every chance to lose a ball game, but I liked our fight," said A&M head coach Jo Evans. "Sometimes you just have a feel that a player is going to hit one out and I felt like that for Meagan. We were fortunate today and found a way in the end."
After three scoreless innings to begin the game, the Cyclones put the first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. An Aggie error put Kelsey Kidwell on base with no outs before Courtney Wray's two-out RBI single to right.
Iowa State added another run in the fifth with an RBI single through the left side by Erica Miller. Miller scored a speedy Carleigh Berry from second on the hit to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
Senior Alex Reynolds cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth with a solo home run that bounced off the top of the fence and out of the park to mark her third long ball of the year.
May's game-tying, solo homer to right center came in the top of the seventh with two outs and a 2-2 count and made the score 2-2.
With the momentum behind them, the Aggies rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth. Junior Macie Morrow tallied an RBI after scoring Spittler from third on an error and sophomore Kelsea Orsak plated the second run on a single up the middle to give A&M its first lead of the game, 4-2.
Dumezich (10-1) and the Aggies took care of business quickly in the bottom of the eighth as Dumezich picked up the win in the circle. In three and two-thirds innings of relief work, Dumezich gave up just three hits and added one strikeout. Sophomore Rebecca Arbino started the game and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, did not give up a walk and struck out five in four and one-third innings pitched.
"Mel did her job to really give us a chance and that's what you want your reliever to do. She did a great job."
Rachel Zabriskie (19-11) threw all eight innings and allowed four runs on nine hits, walked four and added five K's.
Reynolds led the Aggies at the plate going 2-for-2 with home run, a sacrifice bunt and a walk.
The Aggies play the second of the two-game series at the Southwest Athletic Complex tomorrow at 11 a.m.
