Texas A&M Athletics Sets New Graduation Success Rate Record
Nov 15, 2022 | Center for Student-Athlete Services
INDIANAPOLIS – Texas A&M Athletics registered an 86% Graduation Success Rate (GSR), breaking the Aggies' previous record set last year the NCAA announced on Tuesday.
"As we envision the future of Texas A&M Athletics, this type of academic progress is exactly what we see," Director of Athletics Ross Bjork said. "Setting a record Graduation Success Rate in back-to-back years is incredible and speaks to the dedication of our student-athletes in achieving excellence. I am also very proud and thankful for the staff in our Center for Student-Athlete Services for all of the hard work and sacrifice they have poured into our student-athletes. The commitment of all Aggies to our mission of creating opportunities through championship athletics is paramount to our future success."
The Maroon & White's record-breaking mark was led by men's swimming & diving, women's golf, women's tennis, softball and volleyball which all posted perfect GSRs. Additionally, men's golf, women's basketball, soccer, women's swimming & diving and equestrian all turned in GSRs of 85%-or-higher.
"Our student-athletes continue to flourish academically and our 2022 GSR score is the latest demonstration," Deputy Athletics Director Joe Fields said. "It is the highest score in Texas A&M athletics department history. Our student-athletes have consistently raised the bar academically. The Center for Student-Athlete Services is very proud of our student-athletes' academic accomplishments. Student-athletes earning diplomas is a core principle within out athletics department, this is a huge accomplishment for everyone involved."
The GSR is based off the graduation rate data for the 2012-13 to 2015-16 freshman cohorts for all NCAA Division I institutions. All colleges and universities are required by NCAA legislation and federal law (the Student Right-to-Know act from 1990) to report student graduation rates, and those institutions offering athletics aid are required to report for their student-athletes as well. The NCAA acquires student-athlete graduation rate data from the Department of Education's Integrated Post-Secondary Data System Graduation Rate Survey (IPEDS-GRS).
The student-athlete graduation rate calculated directly based on IPEDS-GRS (which is the methodology the U.S. Department of Education requires) is the proportion of first-year, full-time student-athletes who entered a school on athletics aid and graduated from that institution within six years. This federal rate does not account for students who transfer from their original institution and graduate elsewhere; they are considered non-graduates at both the college they left and the one from which they eventually graduate.
