BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M baseball team run-ruled Sam Houston, 13-3, in seven innings Tuesday afternoon in the Blue Bell Homemade Classic at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Blake Binderup led the offensive attack for the Aggies (24-16) as the redshirt sophomore finished the day 2-for-2 with two homers and four RBI. Jace LaViolette, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, followed with a 2-for-3 performance to go along two RBI, while Freshman Terrence Kiel II went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI. Designated hitter Caden Sorrell reached safely in all three plate appearances in the win, finishing 1-for-1 with a homer, two RBI and a game-best two walks.
On the mound, Aiden Sims (1-0) earned the win in relief after tossing two scoreless frames to go along with four strikeouts. Starter Gavin Lyons received a no-decision after working three scoreless innings. The rookie also struck out four on the day.
Binderup opened the scoring in the second with a 420-foot solo blast to left center. The homer marked the redshirt sophomore's sixth of the season and left the bat at 103 mph.
Sorrell extended the lead to 3-0 in the third with a two-run, opposite field home run to left. The sophomore's sixth long ball of the season left the bat at 98 mph and traveled 381 feet.
In the fourth, the Aggies posted a six-spot as the lead ballooned to 9-0. Following a leadoff single from Jamal George, Kiel ripped his first collegiate home run 367 feet to left. Later in the frame, Kaeden Kent stretched the advantage to 6-0 with an RBI single up the middle. Binderup capped the fourth with a three-run homer that just cleared the wall in left.
The redshirt sophomore's second homer of the day left the bat at 106 mph and traveled 349 feet. The multi-homer game marked the first of Binderup's career.
LaViolette extended the Maroon & White lead to 11-0 in the fifth with a two-run single through the right side.
After the Bearkats (8-33) plated three runs in the top half of the seventh, Texas A&M answered with two in the bottom half to make the final 13-3. In the frame, Hayden Schott registered an RBI single, while Nathan Tobin scored the final run of the contest on a wild pitch.
