No. 1 Texas A&M Bombards Marist to Reach Regional Final, 17-4
May 17, 2025 | Softball
Aggies Mac Barbara, KK Dement, Amari Harper and Mya Perez each belted a home run, while Harper led the group with five RBI, Barbara and Dement each added three RBI and Perez drove in a pair. Emily Leavitt earned the win to move to 5-2 on the season after tossing 3.0 innings and striking out three, while yielding two walks and three runs.
Texas A&M (47-10) scored in every inning except the third and had nine different players score runs. Marist (48-9-1) registered five hits from five different players, including a two-run double in the fourth after scoring runs in the first and second frames.
Playing as the away team, Texas A&M plated four runs in the opening frame after consecutive doubles from Barbara and Harper, while Dement followed with a two-run homer. Marist answered in the bottom half after a pair of singles and a wild pitch to chip at the deficit, 4-1. Each team plated a run in the second inning before a scoreless third frame.
The Maroon & White exploded for 10 runs on six hits, including a trio of long balls. Perez and Barbara led the frame off with back-to-back jacks, while Harper singled and later scored after Dement doubled to right center. Allie Enright laced a double off the wall to advance Dement to third, while the pair each scored via sac flies from Kylei Griffin and Kennedy Powell. After consecutive walks the bases were loaded as Barbara was hit-by-pitch to score Kelsey Mathis before Harper blasted her first career grand slam to give the Aggies a commanding 15-2 lead in the top of the fourth. The Red Foxes laced a two-run double down the third base line to double their score before the Aggies added a pair off a Barbara two RBI single in the top of the fifth.
Grace Sparks and Sydney Lessentine each threw scoreless frames to close out the run-rule victory, 17-4.
NOTES
- Kennedy Powell scored a pair of runs setting a program season record 62 runs, previously held by Sharonda McDonald for 18 years since 2007. Texas A&M is now 35-5 when Powell scores a run and 18-1 when she scores multiple times in a game.
- Graduate Mac Barbara matched her season-best with 5 RBI and now ranks third in program history for most RBI in a single season with 66. The catcher went 3-for-4 with 4 H, 5 RBI, 1 2B and 1 HR.
- KK's Dement's 14 home runs are the most by a freshman since Tori Vidales hit 20 in 2015. The freshman has a team-best 17 doubles, which is tied with Megan Gibson (2008) for the sixth most in a season in program history. Dement is also tied in with Kristen Cuyos (2016) at seventh in program history with 61 total season RBI.
- Mya Perez hit her team-leading 15th home run, while driving in her 70th RBI of the season. The sophomore is two RBI short of matching the program record 72 set by Josie Carter in 1982.
- Amari Harper hit her first career grand slam with a jack to left center. She became the fifth Aggie this season to complete the season-long home run set launching at least a solo shot, a two-run homer, a three-run blast and a grand slam.
- The Aggies set a team high four home runs in a game, while it's the seventh time this season with three or more bell ringers in a game. The three home runs in the top of the fourth are the second time the Aggies have hit three jacks since opening up with Utah State this season (2/6/25).
- A&M set a program record 95 doubles in a season that was previously held by the 2008 squad who had 94 doubles.
- Scorigami! The 17-4 victory is a unique final score that has never happened in program history.
- The total home run distance was 995 feet or roughly the distance from the Davis Diamond home plate to the basketball goal inside Reed Arena.
