No. 1 Aggies Eye Super Regional Spot in Showdown with Liberty

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – With a trip to the NCAA Super Regionals on the line, the top-seeded Texas A&M softball team clashes with Liberty in the Bryan-College Station Regional final Sunday at 3 p.m. at Davis Diamond. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., with a potential winner-take-all rematch 35 minutes after game one.
Sunday's game can be streamed on ESPN+ with Nicole Mendes (analyst) and Kevin Fitzgerald (play-by-play) on the call. All Aggie softball games can also be heard on the 12th Man Mobile app or locally on Willy 1550 AM.
NCAA TOURNAMENT NOTES
Texas A&M (47-10) reached a regional final for the 13th time in the last 15 seasons after winning the elimination game, 17-4, in a run-rule dismantling of Marist Saturday night. The Aggies began the regional with an 18-0 no-hit run-rule rout of Saint Francis (PA) Friday evening, before falling to Liberty, 8-5, Saturday evening. A&M's Friday night outing set a program regional record, while the combine no-hitter tossed by Sydney Lessentine and Sidne Peters was the fourth regional no-hitter in program history and first since 2008. Texas A&M was walked 14 times, the third most walks in NCAA Regional history. The Aggies' hit a season-high four home runs in game three, while a trio of the homers were hit in the fourth inning in the game against Marist. The Maroon & White are 9-8 all-time in regional final games. In the eight occasions when faced with elimination entering Sunday, the Aggies are 2-7 and only forced an, if necessary, game once in 2007 when they won both games against Houston to advance to the Super Regional and eventually the WCWS. Amari Harper is leading the offense averaging .667 at the dish hitting 6-for-9, including two home runs and 11 RBI, while adding eight runs. KK Dement follows hitting 4-for-6 (.667), including two doubles, one home run and five runs. Thirteen different Aggies have scored runs in the three games, while the team is averaging 22 plate appearances per strikeout. Texas A&M was tabbed the No. 1 national seed in the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament, marking the first time in program history to be declared the top overall seed. The Aggies are making their 35th appearance and 23rd-straight appearance in the tournament, the seventh longest active streak in the NCAA. A&M boasts a 95-74 overall record in NCAA action, including a 37-9 record when hosting the regional round. This season marks the 17th time to host a regional in program history and the first in consecutive years since the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
LIBERTY PREVIEW
Liberty (49-12) advanced to the final of the Bryan-College Station Regional after a five-run sixth inning propelled the Lady Flames to an 8-5 win over the Aggies Saturday afternoon. Liberty began the regional with a 10-5 victory over Marist on Friday. The Lady Flames are one of two schools outside a power conference to have made an NCAA Regional every year since 2021, while they appeared in the Georgia Regional final a season ago before eventually falling in the "if-necessary" game. Liberty is led by CUSA Head Coach of the Year Dot Richardson. Rachel Roupe was named CUSA Player of the Year, while Elena Escobar was voted CUSA Pitcher of the Year and Savanah Whatley was named CUSA Newcomer of the Year. Texas A&M is 3-1 all-time against Liberty, including a 1-1 record at Davis Diamond after splitting a pair of games in 2019.

Ol' Sarge's charges set a program record 432 runs scored in a single season and have scored double-digit runs in 22 games this season, while winning 20 games via run-rule. The Maroon & White have outscored their opponents 264-110 in home games and have outscored their opponents 81-25 in May. Texas A&M is 33-0 in games when scoring six or more runs, including 13 games against ranked opponents. Kennedy Powell scored a pair of runs against Marist to set the program's single season record 62 runs surpassing Sharonda McDonald who has held the previous record 60 runs since 2007. The Aggies are 35-5 in games when Powell scores a run, including an 18-1 record when she scores multiple times. Under head coach Trisha Ford, the Aggies are 8-5 in postseason play with a +36 run differential. In contrast, in the two seasons prior to her arrival, the Aggies went 3-4 with a -14 run differential in postseason games.

Known for her defense, Amari Harper has been an offensive menace for opposing teams slashing .427/.574/.726, including eight home runs, 11 doubles, 50 RBI, 16 hit-by-pitches, while adding 51 runs. She's hitting 9-for-14 (.643) in her previous four games, including 17 RBI and 11 runs with three homers and four walks. Harper recently set an SEC Tournament game record with six RBI in the route over Texas in the semifinal game. Harper was 5-for-6 (.833) with one home run, one double, while adding six RBI and four runs and a 1.500 slugging percentage in two games to earn SEC All-Tournament Team recognition. The Corona, Calif., native, recorded a career-best 22-game on-base streak from March 14 to April 25. During the stretch she batted .500 at the dish, while hitting five home runs, six doubles with 21 RBI and leading the team with 32 runs. The junior hit her fifth home run of the season breaking a 3-3 tie in the ninth inning to help Texas A&M clinch an SEC series at Mizzou. Harper has hit home runs in consecutive games on two occasions, including the series sweep at No. 22 Auburn and series sweep of non-conference opponents LMU.

After setting a Davis Diamond SEC series total record of 6,916 against No. 3 Florida, the 12th Man bettered the record with 7,014 in the three-game set against No. 6 LSU. The 12th Man is regarded as one of the most dedicated fan bases in the nation. The Aggies rank No. 5 in the nation averaging 2,131 per game this season.
